Featuring a revolutionary small block Ford V8 engine – built for the sole purpose of speed, the AC Cobra kicked dust in the face of its competitors as it won one race after the other on European and American circuits. With its iconic muscle-car looks and high-end performance on the roads, the 60s roadster was the car to have.

British designer, Jamie Martin, has paid homage to the 60s racing icon by designing an AC Cobra concept car for the new millennium. The Cobra Venom V8 is a modern day re-imagining of the original muscle car, and tries to capture the true essence of the roadster. The new age Cobra retains the trademark flowing lines and bulging muscular look of the old school Cobra, but in a smooth aerodynamic finish. A shining metallic grey is the primary color chosen for the concept car with articulated racing stripes running from the rear of the vehicle to its front end. The wheels that set this racer in motion are 17-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero ‘Snake Tread’ tires.

As a racing car, the original Cobra had to have a feather light frame that would allow it to zip past its competition. The new age Cobra Venom has carried on the tradition of having a lightweight body frame with a chassis built from extruded aluminum, and body panels that are built from weight-free carbon fiber. The body frame also features an impressive safety feature: a Formula 1 inspired alloy cocoon that protects the driver’s cabin with front and side impact airbags.

With a sparkling body and seductive design, Jamie Martin’s concept Cobra is a real looker. Its true beauty, however, lies under its hood.  Powered by a 4.6 liter supercharged Ford V8 that can produce 524 BHP, the Venom is lightning quick and goes from 0-60 mph in an estimated 3.4 seconds. The drive train (gearbox) that allows the racer to sprint from a stationary position is a Tremec 6-speed manual transmission that has an automatic paddle shift option. If you are willing to push the speedster to its limit, the concept car can reach a top speed of 214 mph.

It is hard to believe that with such impressive features the Cobra Venom V8 is just a concept car for now. One hopes to see this new age muscle-car ride on the road soon.

Yuexun Chen, a designer based in Taiwan, has designed a chic looking solution for the eye condition that can be carried around in one’s pocket. Titled PEG, the design concept offers people afflicted with Presbyopia the luxury of carrying their corrective lenses in their pockets instead of carrying it around in a protective case.

The exact reason why Presbyopia occurs is still not known. Medical research suggests that due to the loss of elasticity of the crystalline lens, the ability of the eye to focus on nearby objects diminish. The eye condition could also occur as a natural side effect of an aging human body.

Chen’s PEG corrective lens concept is based on simplicity. The central bridge, which rests on the nose, is made from a flexible material. It acts as the protector of the spectacle by absorbing any external force exerted on it. The bridge’s structure is inspired by a spring, which allows the user to coil (close) and uncoil (open) the spectacle as they please.

The lens of the PEG, its most important part, extends from the bridge and tails off at the end of the eyebrow. A pair of protective rubber pads, installed at the ends of the corrective lens, grips the PEG to the eyes. The rubber pads have magnets that allow it to clip (or be folded back) to the other end.

This is all there is to the PEG. No additional frames or sides, just the bridge and the corrective lens.

The minimalist aesthetic of the PEG makes it very attractive to look at, while maintaining a discreet appearance. The spectacle’s designer aesthetic means that it can be taken to parties and outings without sticking out like a sore thumb.   Since the PEG is based on a simple easy to use design, it is a perfect choice for the elderly to overcome their eye condition without having to undergo a surgical procedure.

Because of its beauty and functionality, the PEG design concept was awarded the OPUS design award in 2003.

This piece of genius hails all the way from the creative and slightly eccentric mind of designer Shenzhen Hashi of Shenzhen Hashi Future Parking Equipment Co. The Straddling Bus can be best described as 6m by 4.5m high train with two levels “straddling” the road. This space saving, high capacity bus can easily carry 1300 passengers without the hassle of blocking traffic every time it loads and unloads pedestrians. Just imagine no more congested  bus bays, parking lots, or taxi ranks. The bus can stop at its designated bus/parking spots without affecting the traffic, as vehicles can simply pass under it, continuing on their journey uninterrupted. No need to wait (im)patiently behind buses that stop every ten minutes, just drive on without even breaking your speed.

There are still design concepts that need some sorting out, but building the Straddling bus and “transport network” involves laying rails on both sides of the road. There won’t be any need for building special roads just for bus “lanes,” hence saving energy and man power. When it comes to bus stops/parking spots,  passengers can either board from a special platform, or from a ladder leading directly from the underpass to the ceiling door.

Areas where the Straddling bus will have stations will save tax payers their hard earned income including fuel consumption. The bus will save approximately 900 tons of fuel per annum and reduce carbon emission to 2500 tons. It is expected that the Straddling bus will reduce traffic by 30 percent, and will cost only 10 percent (and a third of the time spent) of what a subway construction would cost. Usually when transportation sectors plan how to speed up traffic, it involves putting more buses on the road. More buses mean more bus terminals and parking lots. Its not only the more costly option, it also increases traffic (and road rage), not to mention all the negative side effects it can have on the environment. Fuel emissions leading to air and water pollution, etc.

After the exhibit held at the 13th Beijing International High Tech Expo in May 2010, the first 186km of rails will commence building later this year in Beijing’s Mentougou district.

An award-winning industrial design consultancy Curve ID has designed an extraordinary piece of watch for one of the leading sports brands of the world, Nike. Vapor 300 is said to be the largest curved LED screen.

The idea behind Vapor 300 was to design a watch that was easy for running. The designers met quite a few runners to get their opinions and suggestions. These meetings were scheduled right before a run and immediately after one. The collective opinion that came from the running fraternity was a demand for a watch that was light, wrist hugging, large display, thin and easy to view.

At the same time the designers got to know of an organization in Korea that was manufacturing curved LED screens. This led to a brainwave and soon what was designed was Vapor 300. This is the first time that an LED screen has been used for a watch and this watch claims to have the largest curved screen. At the same time it also has one of the largest watch displays in the world.

Thought has not only gone into the display of the watch but also in the ergonomic factors. The watch has been tilted at an angle of 27 degrees on the wrist giving it the advantage of easy viewing. The square shape of the watch has buttons very distinctively placed on every corner leaving no room for confusion. When running every runner can view the watch display with utmost comfort and also operate it if needed. The crystal mineral glass is a scratch resistant material that makes it absolutely safe for sports events.

Nike is a company very well known for its high quality sports goods. Vapor 300 is another feather in its cap. With a Vapor 300 strapped on to your wrist, running is never going to be same again. The brief was given to the advertising team at Grey (Barcelona).With the brief in hand, the creative team set out to work.

Writing and designing marketing communication for a pen may not be the easiest thing to do in the world. In order to break through the clutter, the ad has to be original and still manages to communicate the primary function of the pen: it writes.

The creative team at Grey had one minor advantage. The Pilot pens had an extra fine nib. They decided to make this ‘extra fine’ quality of the nib as the cornerstone of their ad campaign. With this ‘eureka’ moment under their belt, the team moved on to executing the idea.

Thousands of doodles were drawn, many mugs of beer were consumed, hours were spent shooting pool; and after all the hard work, the team managed to conceive a brilliant, original, yet deceptively simple print ad campaign for Pilot ‘extra fine’ pens.

The print ads feature a Pilot Extra Fine pen on the left hand corner of the ad with a yellow Lego model taking up the rest of the ad space. On the Lego model, there are finely detailed tattoos in black ink. The ‘faces’ of the Lego models too have been drawn up by the artists and contain facial features and facial expressions.

The artwork on the Lego models is simply amazing. One Lego model contains finely illustrated flames breaking out of its body with a Harley Davidson logo on its left arm. Another model is covered up with skull motifs. One skull has a dollar sign eye-patch on its right eye, while another skull has a cowboy hat with a guitar jutting out of its mouth.

The raciest ad of the campaign features a Lego lady model, without any top on, flaunting her bare back to the viewer. A tattoo, which features an anchor, hearts, and dice inscribed on her lower back. The only piece of clothing on the model is a blue thong.

This print campaign for Pilot Extra Fine pens is brilliant because it manages to illustrate the pen’s function through the creative use of miniature Lego models. The guys at Grey do deserve a pat on their backs for this effort.
