RYOBI Phone Works Is the Perfect Gift for DIY Enthusiasts
Nothing makes DIY enthusiasts as happy as a set of professional tools. RYOBI Phone Works is a set of such tools that make use of your smartphone to create the ultimate measuring instrument.
Sure, there are plenty of apps out there that turn your smartphone into a ruler, level, sound meter, vibrometer and so on. Smart Tools for Android is probably among the best known of them. Still, there are plenty of situations when the set of tools provided by these apps aren’t exactly what you need, either because they don’t include the tool you’re looking for or simply because they are not that intuitive to use. And here’s where RYOBI Phone Works comes into play. You don’t need to remove the smartphone from the equation, as it can still be useful. All you have to do is attach one of the accessories from the Phone Works set and turn the smartphone into a real smart tool.
The set includes:
- Laser level
- Moisture meter
- Inspection scope
- Laser distance measurer
- Stud finder
- Infrared thermometer
- Laser pointer
- Noise suppression earphones
As you can see, there are plenty of tools that still haven’t made their way to smartphones. Most of these, however, exist as standalone tools, so what role does the smartphone play? It’s mainly used as a display for all of them, thus cutting down the production costs. On top of that, some of the smartphone’s sensors are used in tandem with the Phone Works set in order to complement its function and increase the precision of the measurements.
Judging by the first shots from the following clip, I could’ve sworn that RYOBI only made these tools for iPhones, which would have been a shame. However, the last part of the clip mentions the availability of the Phone Works app for Android smartphones as well, so it looks that they haven’t been neglected this time. The sad news is that the only Android phones RYOBI guarantees its Phone Works set will work with are the Samsung Galaxy S3, S4 and S5. Apple fanboys are definitely getting more love, as anything newer than the iPhone 4 will work just fine with these smart tools.
RYOBI Phone Works represents a great alternative to conventional tools, but on the other hand, they seem to be built for weekend warriors, as dusty work environments are no place for flagship smartphones. The tools included in the set start from $15 for the laser pointer and get to $100 for the inspection scope, so you be the judge if they’re worth it.
